Mark Making for East London
2024, LONDON
Mark Making for East London, 2024. Installation. India ink, brush, sand, paper, cardboard. Top: W2500 x H1200 mm. Bottom: W2800 x H2500 mm
The sound of the pressured air
Comes…
from the opposite shore
Transient the fragrance
and nostalgia
of the ocean
Will nature change?
Will not artefacts change?
This feeling of serenity
approaching
from my memories
And I wish them to keep
This artwork is inspired by London’s diverse history.
I see graffiti and people from different countries, it felt like a marking that we are here. I created a poem in sand to mark our presence, but as people walk on it, the letters disappear, symbolizing how history overlaps and changes with new footprints.
The wall art is made of Japanese words from the poem, dissected and rearranged. These characters no longer resemble Japanese but appear as letters from a new language, representing the creation of something new-a blend of cultures and identities reshaping history.
